The Job

Gutters are the cheapest thing on the outside of a house and they cause the most expensive damage when they are ignored. A gutter that overflows at one point runs a sheet of water down the wall every time it rains, and a wall that never dries grows green, loses its render or its pointing, and pushes damp through to the inside. A gutter that has dropped at a bracket holds a puddle that freezes, splits the joint, and then does the same thing. A downpipe that discharges next to the foundations instead of into the drain does the kind of damage that shows up on a survey. Nothing about this is complicated to prevent. On this coast the gutters fill twice a year, with seeds and blossom in the late spring and leaves and moss in the autumn, and the seagulls add to it all year round. That is why gutter cleaning is the one job we put a price on: from £39, with the exact figure depending on the size of the house and how full the gutters are, and we tell you what it is before we start. If the gutter needs more than cleaning, we tell you what and quote for it separately. New guttering, when it is needed, is about the fall and the fixings as much as the material: a gutter hung level does not drain, and a bracket screwed into rotten fascia does not hold.

Signs You Need Us

  • Water pouring over the edge of the gutter in one place when it rains
  • Green or black staining down the wall below a joint or a downpipe
  • Grass or moss growing out of the gutter
  • A gutter that sags between brackets or has pulled away from the fascia
  • Drips from a joint long after the rain has stopped
  • A downpipe that ends above the ground or a blocked gully at the bottom

What We Check

  • Every run of gutter for fall, blockages and standing water
  • Joints, stop ends and outlets for leaks
  • Brackets and the fascia they are screwed to
  • Downpipes, shoes and gullies, so the water gets to the drain
  • The roof edge and the first row of tiles above the gutter
  • Where the water goes once it leaves the downpipe

What We Do

  • Gutter cleaning from £39
  • Leaking joints re-sealed or replaced, sagging runs re-hung to a fall
  • New brackets fixed into sound timber, or the fascia replaced first if it has gone
  • Full replacement in uPVC or aluminium, with new downpipes, outlets and shoes
  • Gutter guards fitted where trees or gulls make blocking a twice-a-year problem
  • Photos of each run before and after

On the Day

Gutter cleaning on a standard house takes an hour or two from a ladder or a vacuum pole, and the moss and debris go with us. Replacing gutters on a two-storey house is a day or two and may need a tower or scaffold, which we tell you beforehand. Downpipes are tested with a hose before we leave.

The Cost of Leaving It

A blocked gutter is a slow leak onto the one part of the house that was never designed to get wet: the wall. Damp walls cost far more to dry out and re-render than gutters cost to clean. Water at the foundations is worse again. And a gutter full of wet moss weighs a surprising amount, which is why the brackets pull out in the end.

Questions About Guttering & Downpipes

What does gutter cleaning from £39 mean?

£39 is the starting price. What yours comes to depends on the size of the house, how many runs of gutter there are and how full they are, and we tell you the figure before we start rather than after.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year on this coast: once after the spring seed fall and once after the autumn leaves. Houses under trees or with a lot of gulls may need more. Once a year is the minimum that keeps the walls dry.

Can you fix a leaking joint without replacing the gutter?

Usually, yes. Most joints can be re-sealed or the union clip replaced. If the gutter is brittle and every joint is going, replacement is cheaper than chasing leaks one at a time.

uPVC or aluminium?

uPVC is cheaper and does the job on most houses. Aluminium is stronger, comes in longer runs with fewer joints, and suits larger or older houses. We quote for what suits the house and tell you the difference.

My fascia is rotten behind the gutter. Can you do both?

Yes, and it is the right order: the fascia first, then the gutter fixed into sound board. See our fascias and soffits page.

Customer Reviews

Had Kyren and his team out to sort a leaking roof valley on our terrace after the heavy rains last month. They turned up when they said they would, got straight to work, and cleaned up all the old tile debris properly before leaving. Fair price and solid work.

Dave MillerExeter

We needed composite cladding put on the back extension to replace some old timber that was rotting. Kyren gave us a straightforward quote with no hidden extras. The finish is spot on, and the lads worked right through a couple of miserable weather days to get it finished on schedule.

Sarah JenkinsTruro

Kyren and his team repointed the entire side gable on our cottage. Very tidy workers, raked out the old crumbling mortar cleanly, and matched the new pointing nicely with the rest of the brickwork. Polite, punctual, and easy to deal with.

Mark TreloarExmouth

Full re-slate and lead flashing job on our bungalow. Kyren explained exactly what needed replacing without trying to upsell unnecessary extras. Scaffolding went up and came down on time, and the roof looks great. Good, hard-working local crew.

Fiona CampbellSt Austell

Called Roofsure after noticing a couple of slipped tiles and loose mortar around the chimney stack. Kyren popped round to take a look, gave a reasonable estimate, and had the job done by the end of the week. Honest, reliable service.
