The Job
Cladding does two jobs. It keeps the weather off a wall that is struggling, and it changes what a house looks like from the road. On the coast the first job matters as much as the second. A gable end or a dormer cheek facing the sea takes the full force of wind-driven rain, and old render, painted pebbledash or tired tile hanging on that face is often where the damp is getting in. Cladding it properly means stripping back to something sound, fixing treated battens with a breather membrane behind them so any water that gets past the boards drains out at the bottom and the wall can breathe, and then fitting the boards themselves with the right trims, corners, starter and finishing profiles so there is no raw edge for the rain to get behind. We fit every type. uPVC shiplap is the everyday choice for dormers and gables: light, low maintenance and cheap to replace a board. Composite boards, wood-plastic and the like, give a timber look without the painting and hold their colour. Real timber, larch or cedar, weathers to silver and suits the right house. Fibre cement boards are the heavy option with the best fire performance with the widest range of colours. Tile hanging, plain clay tiles hung on battens, is what the Victorians and Edwardians used on bays and upper floors round here and is the right repair on a house that already has it. On the Day
A dormer or a gable is one to three days from a scaffold or tower. A whole elevation is longer and we give you a programme. The wall is never left open overnight; the membrane goes on the same day the old covering comes off.
The Cost of Leaving It
A wall that is letting water in gets worse every winter, and damp on the inside brings mould, ruined decoration and cold rooms with it. Render that has blown falls off eventually, sometimes onto a car or a path. Tile hanging that has lost tiles lets the rain straight onto the battens behind and rots them.

Questions About Cladding
Which cladding is best for a house near the sea?
For a dormer or gable that faces the weather, uPVC or composite boards over a ventilated batten system are hard to beat: nothing to paint and nothing to rot. Fibre cement is the heavy-duty choice for a whole elevation. Timber is beautiful and needs the right detailing to last in salt air.
Can you clad over render?
Yes, if the render is sound enough to hold the batten fixings, and we test that. Loose or blown render comes off first.
Does cladding need planning permission?
On most houses, cladding a dormer or gable is permitted development. Whole elevations, conservation areas, listed buildings and some estates with restrictions are different, and we tell you before you commit.
Can cladding insulate the wall as well?
Yes. An insulated backing board behind the cladding makes a real difference to a solid-walled house. We quote for it as an option where it would help.
Do you repair tile hanging?
Yes. Slipped and cracked tiles are replaced to match, and if the battens behind have gone we strip that section and re-batten it. It is the right repair on a house that has tile hanging already.
