Roofers in Teignmouth

The seafront is where Teignmouth's oldest roofs are: the Georgian and Regency terraces of Den Crescent and Powderham Terrace, stuccoed, with parapets that hide shallow roofs and lead gutters behind them, and the Victorian streets that filled in behind the Den. Both the town centre and St James are conservation areas. Up the hill towards Bitton and beyond, the housing turns Victorian and Edwardian, then 1930s along the main roads, then post-war and 1960s at Higher Woodway, Higher Brimley and out towards the golf course. Shaldon, across the estuary, is a village of Georgian cottages and Victorian villas with its own conservation area.

An easterly onto the seafront is the hardest weather in the town: it comes over the sea wall with spray in it and the terraces along the Den take it full on. Parapet roofs suffer most, because a blocked outlet behind a parapet floods the roof rather than overflowing onto the ground, and the first sign is a stain on a top-floor ceiling. On the estuary side and up the hill the south-westerlies do the damage, working at ridges and verges. Salt is everywhere, and on the slate roofs of the older town it is the fixings that go, not the slate.

Teignmouth's older streets are steep and its seafront terraces have no rear access to speak of, so scaffold on the Den means a pavement licence and a plan. We arrange both. Teignbridge Council lists Teignmouth Town Centre and Teignmouth St James as conservation areas, and Shaldon separately; repairs in matching materials are fine, changes to a seafront elevation need checking first.
