Roofers in Exmouth

The Beacon and Louisa Terrace are the Georgian Exmouth that made it a resort: tall houses with parapets, hidden lead gutters and slate roofs, now a conservation area along with Bicton Street and the Albion Street and Windsor Square area, three areas with well over a hundred listed buildings between them. Behind the front the town is Victorian and Edwardian, terraces and villas along Exeter Road and Withycombe and the tree-lined Avenues, with slate roofs, dormers and shared chimney stacks. Littleham is older cottages and later infill; Brixington is the 1960s and 70s estates that doubled the town, roofed in concrete tile on low-pitched roofs that are now at the age where ridges and verges go.

A south-westerly comes straight up the estuary and across the seafront, and Exmouth's roofs take it broadside. The seafront terraces get spray and salt; the Avenues get the gusts through the trees; Brixington on its hill gets the wind under low-pitched concrete tiles that were never fixed for it. Sand adds to the moss and seed in the gutters near the front, and a gutter full of wet sand and moss is heavy enough to pull its brackets out of a tired fascia.

Parapet roofs on the Beacon need scaffold from the road and a pavement licence, which we arrange. Elsewhere the Victorian streets are worked from the pavement and the estates from the drive. East Devon District Council's three Exmouth conservation areas, Louisa Terrace and The Beacon, Bicton Street, and Albion Street and Windsor Square, are where a change of material on a visible roof needs checking before work.
